Croatian Savoury Baking cookbook is divided into 5 chapters, covering bread, burek, pies, pastries and snacks.

All recipes include ingredients expressed in both grams and cups (metric and imperial measuring system).

1 | BREAD. This chapter features traditional, rustic loaves that have always been the staple in Croatian households. From our famous bread under the peka bell (but baked in the oven), old-fashioned cornbread to intricately designed Easter braided bread.

2 | BUREK. Here we work with phyllo pastry (burek) filled with meat, cheese, spinach and potato. Aside from burek, you will learn to bake štrukli and bučnica (savoury pumpkin strudel).

3 | PIES. In Croatia, a pie translates as pogača. This ancient flat bread is enriched with various fillings, such as anchovis, Swiss chard, walnuts and cottage cheese. The star recipes, soparnik and rudarska greblica, are our protected cultural heritage. 

4 | PASTRIES. Get ready for the rich spread of morning pastries, from kifle (milky finger rolls), slanci (soft and salty bread sticks) to pletenice (braided buns). You will fall in love with the continental breakfast.

5 | SNACKS. Become a star baker who knowns how to throw a fabulous party with plenty of snacks and munchies. Learn to make puffs with potatoes, cheese, pork scratchings, flaky crackers, soft and bouncy kiflice and many more finger-licking bites.

A must have especially if you’re of Croatian descent but anyone of any nationality would love it

Our wonderful mother wrote recipes down for us but a pinch here, “punu šaku, there. “Malo ovoga, malo onoga”. Not helpful if you don’t know the recipe by heart. ALL of Andrea’s books are clearly written with photos. Great recipes my mother made as well as new ones to try that we’ve tasted on our travels throughout in the different regions of Croatia. Now our 2 daughters and husbands partake as well (we’ve bought them all 3 books as well) continuing family traditions into the next generations and beyond. Thank you Andrea!

Great Recipes!

This book is what I’ve been missing in my collection of Croatian cookbooks. The recipes are easy to follow and bring back some happy childhood memories of Croatian life in the diaspora. Thanks Andrea for another great cookbook!

Love the cook books

I love my Croatian Cookbooks; I have all 3. Although I learned some of the recipes from my mother, grandmother and aunt, it was interesting to learn more recipes. The background of the dish, in addition to the tools needed, the detailed instructions, photos and extra tips makes authentic Croatian dishes fun and satisfying, especially when the outcome not only tastes delicious, it looks like the photos.

Reminding us of who we are

I was born in Croatia, but spent my childhood in the US. When I came to live in Zadar as a teenager, one of the things that affected me for the rest of my life (besides the natural beauty and a profound sense of history) was the extraordinary cuisine. Every special occasion was a celebration full of laughter, singing and eating some of the most delicious food on the planet. Even everyday meals were comforting and prepared with patience and love (and ALWAYS using the freshest ingredients). These cookbooks are exactly that...a salute to everything good this beautiful country has to offer. The recipes are diverse and beautifully photographed, with easy to follow step-by-step instructions. I have come across some dishes I remember from a long time ago that I had thought I'd never be able to find. Excellent cookbook

Puno hvala Andrea i bravo for yet another excellent croatian cookbook and I can't wait to try these savoury recipes and a companion book to the Croatian Desserts which I regularly use. Thanks also for helping locate the book and follow up much appreciated. I thoroughly recommend this well presented book. Looking forward to the next one.
